This album is a group effort pulled together by Palacio with the Garifuna Collective, a group of musicians of Garifuna heritage. The whole album is remarkable, but this song in particular just goes right into me. I don’t speak Garifuna, but the melody and the guitars and the singing are plenty eloquent. However, Leah put it very nicely: “Beautiful, heart-rending, defiant.” Yeah, that.

electricized:

But when I see someone take out a concertina and sing a pretty song for (with?) their dog, it totally opens up the receptors in my brain.

Now every time I hear Azure Ray, I’ll think of this video, if only for a second, and it’ll make me happy.

Another commute song.

Another commute song.

countryandwestern:

As I announced yesterday on this here long-stagnant blog, I am moving back to <strike>The Promised Land</strike> San Francisco in December. One of the best punk bands, period. Like all punk bands that pre-dated hardcore, they were much more than fast songs and screaming. They used jazz, spoken word, and other more artsy elements in their songs that hardcore bands just didn’t make time or room for.

Which is not to say they ignored hardcore. These guys kicked ass live. Their shows could stomp any hardcore band into the ground. This particular song was fucking anthemic live. The singer, Ronnie Bond, absolutely held the audience in his grasp with his presence and the rest of the guys were incredible musicians. Nobody in this band dropped notes, nobody fluffed. And loud. Jesus so loud.
